What training does a Chiropractor receive?
Chiropractors complete 4 years full time tertiary education in the United Kingdom.
To practice within the United Kingdom, all chiropractors must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council. Once the Chiropractor is accepted on to the Statutory Register they are required to maintain and update their knowledge and skills by further study. We only employ registered Chiropractors at Wimbledon Clinic.
What is an adjustment?
This is the name given to the manipulation ('hands-on') procedure provided by the Chiropractor. Controlled pressure is applied at specific angles to painlessly correct joint alignment or mobility and enable healing.
How long does a treatment session last and how long is a course of treatments?
Treatment sessions normally take about 15 minutes (with a chiropractor) + another 15 minutes using a conjunctive therapy (such as a massage bed); however the initial consultation can vary between 1/2 to an hour.
The Chiropractor will advise each patient on the number of treatments necessary and is dependant on the patient's condition. For example, 5-6 treatments may be suitable for a simple case of low back pain or 6 -12 treatments for chronic conditions.
How long will it take to get better?
Every case is different. Factors to consider are:
- Type of condition present
- How long the condition has been persisting
- The age and lifestyle of the patient
Will my Doctor approve?
You do not require a GP's referral before visiting a chiropractor. However, we do receive lots of referrals from GP's and also refer back to GPs where a condition is outside our scope of treatment. GP's are generally becoming more aware of chiropractic and the benefits that can be achieved
The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) in its advisory capacity to the NHS (2009) recommended Chiropractic manipulation as one of the first ports of call for persistent non-specific low back pain.
