How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?

A supersonic acoustic wave is created within the handpiece of our shockwave machine. This creates a sound pulse which is absorbed by the tissues. The pulse creates a sudden change in pressure within the effected tissues. This leads to the generation of a large positive healing response along with pain reduction.

Although it has been touted as a "Magic Wand" it was pure scientific obsession that spurred on this treatments development.  Advancements have taken the large 'hospital based' machines. seen up until 1990's, and created the modern compact 'clinic based' machines that Wimbledon Chiropractic & Sports Injury Clinic offers today. Since the 70's this treatment has been used to dissolve kidney stones and only in the last 25 years did we supply the treatment to tendons and other fibrous tissues to create accelerated repair.

Today there have been many positive studies in the treatment of a range extremity disorders with heel pain and shoulder pain showing amazing results.

Medical Effects of Shockwave

Effective depth of penetration depends on the pre-set energy (pressure) and the shape of the transmitter used. The values of penetration depth range up to 7 cm, which is why shock wave can be as effective as surgery in a number of conditions.

Analgesic effect - elimination of pain

  • Enhanced scattering of substance 'P', a pain causing hormone
  • Decrease of muscle tension
  • Prevention of spasm and slowing of pain signals

Acceleration of healing

  • Enhanced collogen production
  • Improved metabolism and micro-circulation
  • Ligaments experience new blood vessel production
  • Stimulation of osteoblasts activity (the bone repair cells)

Mobility restoration

  • Enhance re-absorption of calciam deposits
