What is paediatric care? Our first visit? When will my child need it? Is it safe?

Paediatric Client at Wimbledon Chiropractic and Sports Injury Clinic

The above questions many parents ask themselves, at some point, when taking on this monumental assignment of evolving into parents and thinking about well-being care for their young ones.

Chiropractic has no age limit. You may think chiropractic is just for adults, but it extends into paediatric care and we aim to aid in children's development. Parents may not be aware of the benefits of visiting a chiropractor for their child. but as in an adult, the spine can require care, and so may it in your children.

Some of the reasons why parents of infants, babies and children may seek care at Wimbledon Chiropractic & Sports Injury Clinic's paediatric department include:

  • Birth difficulties
  • Sickness complications
  • Bad Positioning
  • Confidence
  • Support
  • Missed Milestones

Take a look at some of the information you need about paediatric chiropractic care offered by Wimbledon Chiropractic and Sports Injury Clinic.

What is Paediatric Chiropractic Care?

There is no lower age limit to have chiropractic treatment!

Chiropractic care for your little one comprises modified gentle massage techniques using slight pressure, as well as mobilisation of affected joints all suitable and safe for babies.

Care and attention are taken to parents' concerns when discussing medical history and lifestyle followed by an extensive postural and orthopaedic examination including reviewing neurological functioning.

On my first visit, what to expect?

A paediatric session would start with an initial consultation that goes over any past medical history, issues/difficulties, diet, parents' concerns and physical activity.

There will likely be a review of any nutritional supplements you or your child may take, eating habits and diet, as nutrition is an integral part of a healthy child.

The next step is the examination portion will be looking to check for restrictions in the spine, muscle imbalances, primitive reflexes and, depending on the child's age, gait analysis.

Depending on the child's age, corrective/strengthening exercises will be given in the office to work on muscular imbalance. Parents will be given homework to do with their little ones. The next step is a body adjustment which may be cranial, body stretching, massage or spinal.

The chiropractor could use any of the following techniques:

  • Diversified adjustments

  • Craniosacral Therapy

  • Activator

  • Webster (Baby Turning)

The top three things to take home from the first session typically include:

  • Strengthening/corrective exercises

  • Diet changes incorporation of nutritional supplements

  • Burping techniques
  • Soothing techniques

And the parents are looking for subtle changes from visit to visit (if the child had any complaints).

Does it hurt?

Not at all! We apply a gentle touch with paediatric care, and any pressure is equivalent to you feeling an avocado at the grocery store.
The practitioner explains the treatment approach step-by-step with the parents and allows for any questions and concerns to be dealt with during the consult

How long does it take?

After the initial visit, any follow-up appointments can range from 10-15 minutes.

Is it safe?

Yes! The key to safety in paediatric chiropractic is education. Dr Thriya has done multiple courses with the Paediatric network and was registered with the Paediatric Council of South Africa.

She is constantly furthering her skills and knowledge through the associateship with the International Paediatric Association in pregnancy, postpartum and paediatrics.
