Simple remedies for when you have a stiff neck

Take a break

Technology has enhanced all of our lives, but it is also responsible for an increase in neck pain. Working on our laptops and smartphones for hours can result in a permanently stiff neck that is painful and uncomfortable. This is usually because of poor posture while using these devices, weakening the neck muscles. You can try a few things at home when you are suffering from the discomfort of a stiff neck. Below we share some helpful information with you.

Take a break

Staring at a laptop screen for hours will only lead to neck problems. This is why it's always important to take a break. Stand up, walk about and do something else. Make a drink, and go for a short walk. It doesn't matter what you do if you change your posture and allow your neck muscles to rest and change position.

Remember to stretch

Stretching your neck can not only help to relieve pain, but it can also help to avoid pain. Gently rotate your neck to change position and loosen muscles. Don't jerk or twist, but move gently. Rotating the neck in rhythmic circles and moving your shoulders up and down can be quite soothing.

Support your neck while you sleep

When you are suffering from a stiff neck then it's essential that you can sleep and rest without any neck pain. Never sleep on your stomach; choose instead to sleep on your back or side. A firm mattress can also help, as can a neck pillow, but only use this support for a short time.

Anti-inflammatories

You can always take pain relief medication, such as ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory to help relieve pain, but this should only be in the short term. Combine pain relief with gentle massage and heat to loosen and relax your muscles. For best results, massage should ideally be carried out by a professional.
